Cabarete as a SUP vacation destination

Cabarete is fast becoming a hot spot for al things watersport. In the early days, windsurfing was king, then kiteboarding came on board about 15 years ago. Then surfing had a resurgence a few years back. Now, with the rise in stand up paddle boarding, you can usually spot a paddler out in the bay, at kite beach or at Encuentro each morning.

While there are many local outfits that will rent you a board, why not bring your own! Inflatable stand up paddle boards by SUP brands such as Red Paddle Co, Naish and Starboard, are quickly making inroads into the surf breaks, rivers, lakes and waterways of your local area. Being able to simply roll up your paddle board, wheel it through the airport and check it onto the plan with no headaches of oversize luggage whatsoever, is a huge plus. There is nothing quite like riding your own gear in a new spot to ensure you have fun from the first to the last minute of your vacation.

Traveling with your inflatable paddle board

Travelling the world with your paddle board has never been easier. Inflatable paddle boards by industry leaders Red Paddle Co and other notable brands including Naish Paddle Boards and Starboard SUPs, are resetting everyone’s perception and what can be achieved with a portable stand up paddle board.

Inflatable paddle boards can be rolled up, folded up and packed into a backpack or wheeled bag. This makes them extremely convenient to travel with. These boards can fit in the trunk of a small car, check in on aeroplanes and carried on your back if you choose to hike into a remote lake, river, beach, or lagoon.

On top of that, the 3 piece or breakdown paddles available also fit in the board bag along with all accessories for another great session on the water.

But what about performance you ask? Well, inflatables have come forward in leaps and bounds over the last 5 years mostly thanks to the afore mentioned brands leading the industry with technological and design advances. Inflatable SUP boards can pump up to 25PSI, which is more than enough to hold shape and be competitive with a true hard board on the race scene. However 15-20PSI is suitable for most paddlers and they get to enjoy the water but have the pleasure of a convenient package for transportation and storage.

Find out more about inflatable paddle boards at Green Water Sports. There are some 2014 boards still on sale! Spring is just days away and the days are warming up already.

Can you fish from a stand up paddle board?

SUP-stand-up-paddle-board-fishing-red-paddle-co-SUP-fishing-boardFishing from a stand up inflatable paddle board is really very clever. Being able to roll up your equipment and carry it/drive it/sail it into remote locations or stow in the trunk of your hatchback or below decks in your ocean going yacht or lake motor boat, opens up a world of new paddling and fishing locations. But, what if a hook punctures your board? Well, unless you are fishing for 10ft great whites, I wouldn’t worry about hooks piercing your board. A filleting knife perhaps, so you might want to leave that until you are back on a land!

The inflatable stand up paddle board by industry renowned Red Paddle Co the 10’8″ Mega is especially suited to fishing of all sorts. 10’8″ long and 36″ wide, it is very stable, with plenty of room to move, swing and pull your catch aboard. It also has 4 tie down points where you can attach a chest or tackle box etc. If you are new to paddle boarding and need a full kit, it is also available here as a board, paddle and free leash package.

Red Paddle Co inflatable SUPs – Which pump to use?

Inflatable-SUP-pump-Ezee-and-K-pumpWow, inflatable SUP pumps have come a long way in just a few short years. K-Pump has developed a true two stage pump with both a high volume and high pressure cylinder for quick and then high pressure inflation. They come in two sizes, they have universal valve adaptors making them super easy to use, they are made in the USA and are tough as nails. So, this called for a comparison test against the standard Bravo made pumps. The Red Paddle Co Ezee and the Red Paddle Co Ezee HP are the two standard Bravo pumps that usually ship with inflatable stand up paddle boards.

Pictured are the Ezee, Ezee HP, the K-220 and the K-20. Green Water Sports, online specialist retailer for all things inflatable SUP, have done a comparison article with the 4 pumps featured. Check out the K-Pump and Red Paddle Co pump comparison.

VIDEO: How to attach your SUP leash

how-to-attach-your-stand-up-paddle-board-leash-to-you-and-your-boardOne of the most important parts of your stand up gear is your SUP leash. We connect to the board with leashes for 2 reasons: for your safety and the safety of others. The leash is going to keep you attached to your paddle board at all times, a buoyant floatation device. Find out why the SUP leash is such an integral part of stand up paddling here. There are a few types of stand up leash, which Green Water Sports cover in this leash guide, but they usually attach to you and the board in the same way. Except a leash used on rapids/rivers that attaches to your waist for quicker release.

Attaching your stand up leash can be a little bit confusing at first but not to worry, Green Water Sports have made a nice video that helps us connect everything up the right wat. Lets have a look at the video: How to attach a SUP leash.
